Film openings and conventions
As I said in my last post I will be aiming for a noire style, meaning the opening will be in black and white with reds picked out to emphasise main or important characters and props.
My three film openings:
1. Brute force (1945)
2.Turning point (1952)
3. International Crime (1938)
Conventions:
1. Opening Text: The opening text across all three of these are near enough identical due to how young and undeveloped the film industry was at this time, they all have white bold text overlaying the shots in the background and all seem to last roughly the same amount of time.
2. Sets: All the sets involved seem to be fairly similar meaning that most of them are wide establishing landscape shots. Most of which include a city usually at night and more often than not it's raining.
3. Characters: After the opening credits we're normally greeted by a white man talking about crime of some nature there is some variation in this regard as Brute force opens in a prison turning point and a press conference and international crime in a radio show.
4. Music: The music is nearly indistinguishable from one another they all have sweeping orchestral soundtracks favouring brass instruments. This reflects the time in which these were filmed.
5. Camera work: Almost all of these use eye level wide camera shots bar Brute force that uses both high and low angle. This again most likely reflects the time which these were filmed but I will attempt to use more modern techniques to make the opening more engaging for modern audiences.
